Most rugs in Memphis homes are wool — the Persian and oriental pieces of older estates, the hand-tufted designer rugs in newer construction, the machine-made wool of department-store Karastans and Couristans. All deserve cleaning that preserves the natural lanolin in the wool fiber, not aggressive chemistry that strips it permanently. Steam cleaning and standard carpet methods strip lanolin; our wool method preserves it. Free pick-up across the Mid-South.

Wool fibers contain natural lanolin — a protective oil that gives wool its soil resistance, water resistance, and characteristic feel. Standard alkaline carpet-cleaning chemistry strips lanolin permanently, dramatically shortening the rug's lifespan and dulling its appearance. Our wool method preserves lanolin: neutral or low-pH chemistry, cool-to-warm water (never hot), shortened wash cycles, controlled flat drying. The wool comes out cleaner than steam cleaning could ever achieve — and with its natural soil resistance fully intact.

Free pick-up across West Tennessee, Northwest Mississippi, and East Arkansas. Most rugs are returned within 7 days from pick-up. We provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Wool Rug Specialty

Specialist methods for every wool variety.

Different wools have different lanolin content, fiber length, and cleaning sensitivities.

Hand-spun Persian & Turkish

Traditional handspun wool used in fine oriental rugs. High lanolin content, irregular fiber length, often natural dyes.

Tibetan highland wool

Exceptionally high lanolin and long staple length. Common in modern hand-knotted Tibetan and Nepalese rugs.

New Zealand wool

Standard for modern hand-tufted designer rugs (Pottery Barn, RH, West Elm). Fine and consistent.

Merino

Soft, fine, premium wool used in higher-end modern rugs. Lower lanolin than handspun, requires careful cleaning.

Hand-tufted designer wool

Modern wool pile bonded to a backing with latex adhesive. Wash must protect the latex from over-saturation.

Machine-made wool

Karastan, Couristan, and similar — robust construction, generally tolerates wool-specific cleaning very well.

Memphis Wool Rug FAQ

Common questions about wool rug cleaning in Memphis.

Where in Memphis do you offer wool rug pick-up?

Free pick-up across Memphis, Germantown, Cordova, Collierville, Bartlett, Olive Branch, Southaven, and the wider Mid-South.

Why does wool rug cleaning need specialized methods?

Wool fibers contain natural lanolin that gives wool its soil resistance and characteristic feel. Standard alkaline carpet chemistry strips lanolin permanently, shortening the rug's lifespan.

Will steam cleaning my Memphis wool rug damage it?

Yes — typically. Steam-cleaning equipment uses hot water and alkaline chemistry that strip lanolin permanently from wool fiber. The rug looks acceptable afterward but has lost much of what made the wool valuable. Specialist wool cleaning preserves the lanolin.

Can wool rugs be steam-cleaned at home?

We strongly recommend against home steam cleaning on any wool area rug. Hot water damages the lanolin, can cause shrinkage in untreated wool, and frequently triggers color run in dyed wool.

Will cleaning shrink my wool rug?

Properly performed professional cleaning will not shrink a wool rug. Shrinkage happens when wool is exposed to hot water, aggressive agitation, or improper drying — all common in steam cleaning.
