Why a pad matters
A proper pad absorbs traffic impact, prevents slippage, and keeps the rug's foundation from grinding against hard floors. The grinding is what kills rugs — every footstep on an unpadded rug compresses the wool against an unforgiving surface, breaking down the fibers and the foundation knots.
Hard floor vs over carpet
Hard floor pads are firmer, with a non-slip underside and a cushioned top. Over-carpet pads are denser and thinner, designed not to creep on the carpet below. The right pad depends on what is under your rug and how the rug is used.
Custom-cut, sized to your rug
Stock pads from a big-box store are the wrong size by definition. We cut every pad to your rug's exact dimensions — a quarter-inch shy of each edge so the pad disappears under the rug.
The right pad extends rug life by years.
A proper rug pad does three things: it absorbs foot-traffic impact (extending the rug's lifespan), it prevents the rug from sliding (which is both a fall risk and a wear-acceleration problem), and it protects the floor underneath from dye transfer or surface scuffing. The wrong pad causes more harm than no pad at all — many adhesive-backed pads release chemicals that stain hardwood floors permanently, and many cheap rubber pads break down and bond to the rug back over time.
We source two pad types matched to the situation. For most homes with hardwood, tile, or laminate flooring, we recommend a natural rubber and felt blend pad — durable, non-staining, and provides both grip and cushion. For homes with carpeted rooms where rugs sit over carpet, we recommend a thinner non-slip mesh pad that prevents the rug from migrating without creating a tripping hazard at the edges.
Pad sizing matters: pads should be one to two inches smaller than the rug on each side. Properly sized pads stay invisible at the rug's edges and don't catch on vacuums or feet. We measure and trim pads to fit each rug before delivery.
Pad pricing runs $1.50–$3.00 per square foot depending on construction. A typical 8×10 area rug needs a $120–$240 pad. Pads typically last 7–15 years before needing replacement. We replace pads during cleaning visits when needed and dispose of old pads — saving the trip and the disposal hassle.
