The short version

Wool rugs and carpet cleaning equipment are designed for opposite jobs. Carpet cleaners use high-temperature water and alkaline chemistry to power-blast soil out of synthetic-fiber wall-to-wall carpet — which is fine, because synthetic carpet has nothing organic to damage. The same equipment, used on a wool rug, strips out the natural lanolin oils that give wool its soil resistance, water resistance, and characteristic feel. The damage is permanent. After steam cleaning, a wool rug is brittle, soils faster, may have shifted dye colors, and has lost a meaningful amount of its value. The faster and more visible failure is dye run: hot water, alkaline detergent, and heavy saturation together are the classic recipe for colors bleeding into each other, often before the rug has finished drying.

This is not a controversial claim. Every major rug-care professional organization recommends against carpet-cleaning methods on wool rugs. The wool industry's own care guidelines specify cool-to-warm water and neutral pH chemistry. Yet steam cleaning of wool rugs continues to be common — typically performed by carpet cleaning companies who do not specialize in rugs and who do not understand the chemistry.

This article explains the chemistry, shows what damage looks like, and describes the proper alternative.

What lanolin is and why it matters

Wool fibers are naturally coated with a fatty substance called lanolin, also called wool wax. Sheep produce lanolin from their sebaceous glands to waterproof their fleece in the field. When wool is processed for textiles, some lanolin is removed during cleaning, but a significant residue remains in finished wool yarn — typically 1% to 2% of fiber weight.

That residual lanolin does three important jobs in a finished rug:

Soil resistance. Lanolin is hydrophobic. It causes water-based stains to bead on the surface of wool fibers rather than soaking into the fiber core. This is why wool rugs forgive small spills that would set permanently into synthetic carpet.

Dye stability. Lanolin acts as a binding layer between the wool fiber and the dye molecules attached to it. This is part of why properly-dyed wool rugs hold their colors for centuries, while synthetic-dyed synthetic carpet often fades within years.

Hand and feel. The characteristic "soft but substantial" feel of a quality wool rug comes partly from the lanolin coating on the individual fibers. Lanolin gives wool its natural luster and prevents fibers from feeling brittle or wiry.

Strip the lanolin out, and you damage all three properties simultaneously.

What steam cleaning does at the molecular level

Carpet cleaning equipment, despite the name "steam cleaner," does not actually use steam. It uses water heated to 180-220°F injected under pressure, simultaneously vacuumed back out as a slurry. The water is mixed with detergent — typically alkaline (pH 9-11) to break down oily soil through saponification.

That high-temperature alkaline water does two things to lanolin in wool fibers.

First, the heat itself breaks down the bonds between lanolin molecules and wool fibers. Lanolin has a melting range of approximately 100-120°F. Once water temperature exceeds 140°F, lanolin liquefies and migrates out of the fiber's outer scales. Carpet cleaning water at 200°F+ accelerates this process dramatically.

Second, the alkaline chemistry continues stripping lanolin even after temperature drops. Lanolin is broken down by alkaline conditions through a process called saponification — the same chemistry that turns animal fat into soap. At pH 10, lanolin saponifies steadily; at pH 11, rapidly. The detergent residue remaining in the wool after cleaning continues this damage for hours after the technician leaves.

The combined effect: a single steam cleaning cycle removes 30-50% of a wool rug's residual lanolin. Multiple cleanings strip the rest. The lanolin does not regenerate. Once gone, it is gone permanently.

What lanolin damage looks like

A wool rug that has been steam-cleaned shows a predictable progression of damage signs.

Within weeks: The pile feels different. Where it used to feel soft and substantial, it now feels slightly drier and crispier. Hold a tuft between your fingers and rub gently — it feels less like wool and more like coarse cotton. The luster of the pile under light has dulled noticeably.

Within months: The rug attracts soil noticeably faster than it used to. What used to need cleaning every two years now looks dingy after one. Spots and spills no longer bead on the surface — they soak straight in. Vacuuming pulls more fiber than it used to (because brittle fibers shed faster).

Within years: Dye colors begin shifting. Reds may fade or dull, blues may lose intensity, ivories may yellow. This is because the lanolin layer that bound the dye to the fiber is gone, and the dye molecules are now exposed to environmental degradation. The pile may begin showing brittleness — fibers snap rather than bend when stressed.

By this stage, the damage is essentially irreversible. The rug can still be cleaned and maintained, but the pre-damage condition cannot be recovered. Insurance appraisals on lanolin-damaged wool rugs typically show 20-40% value reduction relative to comparable undamaged pieces.

Why carpet cleaning equipment is the wrong tool

It helps to understand what carpet cleaning equipment was actually designed for. Wall-to-wall carpet, fastened to a sub-floor with tack strips, is in fact extremely difficult to clean. Soil works deep into the dense pile, and the only practical way to dislodge it is through high-pressure water injection followed by immediate vacuum extraction. The high temperature helps because most carpet soil is oily and breaks down under heat. The alkaline chemistry helps because it saponifies that oily soil.

For its intended purpose — synthetic-fiber wall-to-wall carpet — this equipment works well. The synthetic fibers (polypropylene, nylon, polyester) have no organic component to be damaged by heat or alkaline chemistry. They are, chemically speaking, plastic. You can pour bleach on synthetic carpet without damaging the fiber itself.

Wool is the opposite of plastic. It is an organic protein fiber with a complex structure that includes the lanolin coating, an outer scale layer (cuticle), and an inner cortex of keratin proteins. Every step of carpet cleaning chemistry damages one or more of these structures. The result is not "clean wool" — it is "damaged wool that is currently free of recent soil."

The proper alternative: full-immersion hand wash

Real wool rug cleaning is fundamentally different from carpet cleaning. The safe alternative is a proper immersion rug wash — slow, hand-finished, and using chemistry that respects the fiber.

The standard process: First, the rug is inspected and dye-stability tested with cool water on a small section of each color to identify any fugitive dyes. Second, the rug is hand-dusted using pneumatic tools to remove dry soil from the foundation — this step alone removes pounds of dust that vacuums cannot reach. Third, any specific stains are pre-treated individually with appropriate chemistry. Fourth, the rug is washed in a controlled water bath using cool-to-warm water and neutral pH (6.5-7.5) chemistry. Fifth, the rug is rinsed thoroughly to remove any chemistry residue. Sixth, the rug is flat-dried at controlled temperature and humidity to prevent foundation distortion.

This process takes 7 days from pickup to delivery. It is not faster, and it is not cheaper. But it preserves the lanolin, the dye stability, and the structural integrity of the rug.

Done correctly, wool rugs can be cleaned this way every two to three years for the rug's entire 80-150 year lifespan, with no cumulative damage and no progressive value loss.

What to do if your wool rug has already been steam-cleaned

If you discover a wool rug in your home has previously been steam-cleaned by a carpet cleaning company, several things are true at once.

First, the lanolin loss is permanent. No process restores the natural lanolin coating. There are commercial "wool conditioner" products that coat fibers with synthetic substitutes, but these are temporary and do not replicate the binding properties of natural lanolin.

Second, the rug is still usable. Steam cleaning damage rarely makes a wool rug catastrophically degraded; it just permanently reduces its quality. The rug can still serve in a home for many years, just with somewhat lower performance and value than its undamaged condition.

Third, future cleaning should switch to proper hand-wash methods. Continued carpet-cleaning damage will compound. Switching to proper methods stops the damage from progressing further.

Fourth, if the rug has appraisal value, document the damage. A pre-and-post-damage appraisal can be useful for insurance, estate planning, or potential disputes with the company that performed the steam cleaning.

Bottom line

Steam cleaning equipment is the right tool for synthetic wall-to-wall carpet and the wrong tool for wool area rugs. The high-temperature alkaline chemistry that cleans synthetic carpet effectively also strips lanolin from wool permanently, leaving the rug brittle, fast-soiling, dye-unstable, and reduced in value. The proper alternative is full-immersion hand wash with cool water and neutral pH — the method developed specifically for wool rugs and the only method that preserves the rug's properties indefinitely.

The answer should describe a multi-day hand-finished process at a dedicated rug-cleaning facility, not a same-day truck-mounted in-home service. The latter, regardless of marketing language, is carpet cleaning applied to a rug.
