Rug Deodorize.
For rugs with embedded odors — pet, smoke, mildew, or general age. Treatment penetrates the foundation, not just the pile.
What we treat
Pet odor is the most common — and the trickiest, because the source is usually below the surface. We also treat smoke odor (cigarette, fireplace, fire damage), mildew from water damage, and general musty smell from long storage.
Why surface treatments fail
Sprays and powders mask odor temporarily. The source compounds are still in the foundation, and the smell returns within weeks. Real deodorizing treatment penetrates to the foundation level and neutralizes the compounds, not the perception of them.
Honest assessment
Severe pet damage that has reached the backing may require pet stain removal as well. We will tell you what is recoverable and what is not before any work begins.
Foundation-deep odor removal.
Surface-level odor masking products are easy to find. Genuine odor removal — getting the odor source out of the rug rather than just covering it — is harder, and it's what we do. Most persistent rug odors come from one of three sources: pet urine that has soaked into the foundation, moisture damage causing mildew, or smoke from fire or extended cigarette exposure.
Each source requires its own treatment approach. Pet urine is the most common. The acid in urine binds to wool fibers chemically, and the urea components feed bacterial growth that creates persistent odor even after surface cleaning. Our pet-odor treatment uses an enzyme-based foundation flush that breaks down both the acidic and biological components — applied during cleaning, not as a separate post-cleaning add-on.
Mildew and smoke each require different chemistry. Mildew treatment uses an antimicrobial wash followed by extended controlled drying. Smoke treatment uses ozone exposure during the drying phase to break down smoke molecules at the molecular level. Both are most effective when paired with full immersion cleaning rather than surface cleaning.
Honest expectation-setting: we can typically remove 95%+ of pet urine odor when caught within months of the damage. Older damage that has set into the foundation may leave faint residual odor even after thorough treatment. For severe cases, we'll tell you up front whether complete removal is realistic. Treatment is included in our cleaning pricing for lightly affected rugs; severe cases run $50–$200 in addition.
Odor lives in the foundation.
Smells from pets, smoke, or damp don't sit on the surface of a rug — they soak down into the foundation, where surface sprays and home machines can't reach. That's why a rug can smell clean for a day and then turn again: the source was never removed, only masked.
Our deodorizing is built around a full-immersion wash that flushes the foundation completely, followed by a targeted treatment matched to the odor — enzyme work for organic smells like pet urine, different chemistry for smoke or mildew. Removing the source, not covering it, is what makes the result last.
- Pet odors, cigarette and fire smoke, and musty or mildew smells
- Full submersion flush rather than a surface spray
- Enzyme treatment for organic, protein-based odors
- Source removed from the foundation so the smell doesn't return
