MicroSeal rug protection.
Permanent stain and sun-fade protection that goes into the fiber instead of sitting on top of it. Applied in our workshop, once, for the life of the rug.

What it is
Most rug protectors are a coating. They wrap the outside of each fiber in a film that slows how fast a spill soaks in — and they wear away under foot traffic and rinse off the next time the rug is washed. That is why a conventional protector has to be bought again at every cleaning.
MicroSeal works differently. It penetrates into the fiber, down to the inner cortex, and protects it from the inside out. Because the protection is in the fiber rather than on it, it does not scuff off with traffic and it survives routine professional cleaning. It is applied once and stays with the rug.
What it protects against
Three things, and the third is the one that sets it apart:
- Stains. Spills cannot bond to the fiber, so they stay liftable rather than setting in.
- Wear. Dry soil and grit are what cut wool fibers apart from the foundation up; sealed fibers resist that abrasion.
- Sun fade. The reason most rugs look tired is not dirt, it is UV. MicroSeal is one of the very few treatments that addresses fading at all, and it is the main argument for choosing it over a standard protector.
What it does not do
It does not make a rug stain-proof, and we will not tell you it does. Prompt blotting still matters. What changes is your margin for error: a spill that would have been a permanent mark becomes something you can lift. It also does not change how the rug looks or feels — no sheen, no stiffness, no change in color.
MicroSeal or Scotchgard?
Both are worth having. They are built for different rugs and different budgets.
| Scotchgard | MicroSeal | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Coats the outside of the fiber | Penetrates into the fiber |
| Stain protection | Yes, while the coating lasts | Yes, permanent |
| Sun fade protection | No | Yes |
| Survives re-cleaning | No — reapply each wash | Yes — applied once |
| Price | $0.50 / sq ft, every cleaning | $2.00 / sq ft, one time |
| Best for | Everyday and replaceable rugs | Hand-knotted, antique, and sunlit rugs |
The short version: if the rug is one you expect to replace in a few years, Scotchgard is the sensible spend. If it is hand-knotted, antique, an heirloom, or it sits where the afternoon sun hits it, MicroSeal is the one that pays off — you buy it once and it protects the rug for as long as you own it.
What MicroSeal costs.
Multiply your rug's length by its width in feet. A 5×7 rug is 35 sq ft, so MicroSeal is $70. An 8×10 is 80 sq ft, or $160. A 9×12 is 108 sq ft, or $216. MicroSeal is applied as part of a full cleaning, so the cleaning is priced separately at $3.00 per square foot.

Why we chose it.
We have cleaned rugs since 1881 and we are slow to add anything to the process. MicroSeal earned its place for a few reasons.
- It is WoolSafe approved — the independent certification that matters most for the wool and natural fibers we handle every day.
- It was developed for the fibers we care about: wool, silk, suede, and leather, rather than adapted from synthetic carpet chemistry.
- MicroSeal reports independent laboratory testing by Boeing Aerospace, Gulfstream, and Dassault Falcon, and holds Boeing certification for aircraft interiors — an unusually demanding standard for a fabric treatment.
- MicroSeal International is an ASID industry partner, and has been in the field for more than 25 years.
Certifications, laboratory testing, and performance claims described on this page are MicroSeal International's, and are reproduced here as the manufacturer states them. MicroSeal® is a registered trademark of MicroSeal International; Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners is authorized to apply and advertise the product. Scotchgard™ is a trademark of 3M.
How it's applied.
MicroSeal is the last step, never the first. Applying any protector to a soiled rug seals the dirt in with it.
- Free pick-up. We collect the rug from your home anywhere in the five metros we serve.
- Inspection and testing. Fiber, dye stability, and construction are checked and logged — as with any treatment, we test before we treat, especially on antique and silk pieces.
- Dusting and full immersion wash. The rug is cleaned to its cleanest possible state first.
- Controlled drying. Slow, even drying under controlled conditions.
- MicroSeal application. Applied at the correct rate for the fiber and worked in, then cured.
- Final inspection and delivery. The rug comes home wrapped and ready to lay.
MicroSeal adds a day or two to our normal seven-day turnaround from pick-up to delivery.
