Rug Scotchgard.
Invisible stain-resistant treatment applied after cleaning. Buys time when spills happen.
How it works
Scotchgard creates an invisible barrier around each fiber. When something spills, the liquid beads on the surface and sits there long enough to be blotted up — instead of immediately wicking into the pile and foundation.
When we apply it
Always after a wash, never before. Applying Scotchgard to a soiled rug locks the dirt in. We apply it as the final step, while the rug is still controlled-drying, so the treatment penetrates evenly.
How long it lasts
Typical effectiveness is 12 to 24 months in a normal household. High-traffic rugs and rugs with pets benefit from re-application every wash cycle.
What Scotchgard actually does.
Scotchgard is a fluorochemical treatment that makes individual rug fibers temporarily resistant to water- and oil-based stains. It does not make a rug stain-proof. What it does is buy time — when something spills, the liquid beads up on the surface for several minutes instead of immediately wicking into the fibers. That window is often the difference between a quick blot and a permanent stain.
We apply Scotchgard after professional cleaning, when the rug is in its cleanest possible state. Treatment lasts roughly 12 to 24 months depending on traffic and re-cleaning frequency. Each subsequent professional cleaning will partly remove the previous treatment — we re-apply at the customer's request after each clean.
Scotchgard works on most fibers but with caveats. Wool takes treatment well. Synthetics (polypropylene, nylon) take treatment well. Silk and silk-highlighted areas we treat selectively or skip — silk fibers can show subtle changes in luster from any topical treatment. We always discuss this on silk pieces before applying.
Scotchgard is most valuable in homes with young children, pets, or open-plan dining areas where spills are likely. For collectors with high-value display pieces in low-traffic rooms, the protection is less critical. Treatment runs roughly $0.50–$0.80 per square foot depending on rug construction.
If the rug is hand-knotted, antique, or sits in direct sunlight, it's worth comparing against MicroSeal permanent protection. MicroSeal penetrates the fiber instead of coating it, so it is applied once rather than at every cleaning, and unlike Scotchgard it also protects against sun fade. It costs more up front — $2.00 per square foot — but for a rug you intend to keep, it is usually the better value.
One important note: Scotchgard treatment is a complement to professional cleaning, not a substitute. The treatment provides a temporary stain-resistance window, but routine vacuuming and prompt blotting of any spills remain essential. We always recommend Scotchgard be paired with regular professional cleaning every two to three years to maintain both protection and rug condition.
A protector, not a force field.
A fiber protector is applied after a rug is fully cleaned. It coats the fibers and slows how quickly liquids soak in, which buys you time — the minutes between a spill and a stain — to blot it up before it sets. It does not make a rug stain-proof, and it isn't a substitute for prompt cleanup.
Protection wears off gradually with use and cleaning, so it's reapplied after each wash rather than once and forgotten. It earns its keep most in dining rooms, entryways, kid-and-pet households, and other high-traffic spots where spills are a question of when, not if.
- Applied after a full cleaning, not over a dirty rug
- Slows liquid absorption so spills can be blotted before staining
- Reapplied after each wash, since it wears with use
- Most valuable in dining rooms, entries, and busy households
