How we store
Rugs are rolled — never folded — wrapped in breathable material, tagged, and photographed at intake. They sit on racks in a humidity-controlled room, off the floor, away from sunlight. Mothproofing treatment is applied as standard before storage begins.
Periodic inspection
Stored rugs are inspected at regular intervals for any sign of moth activity or environmental change. If anything is found, you hear from us before it becomes a problem.
Common reasons to store
Home renovations. Seasonal swaps (summer cottons replacing winter wools and vice versa). Extended travel. Estate transitions. College storage. Anything that takes a rug out of daily use for more than a few weeks is a candidate for proper storage.
What proper rug storage actually looks like.
Storing a wool rug improperly is one of the fastest ways to ruin it. The two main risks are moths (which eat wool fibers) and humidity damage (which causes mildew, dye migration, and foundation rot). Both are preventable with proper storage practices that most home storage spaces don't provide.
Our storage process starts with thorough cleaning — soil and food residue attract pests and accelerate fiber deterioration. After cleaning, we apply mothproofing treatment to wool pieces. The rug is then rolled (never folded — folding creates permanent foundation creases on hand-knotted rugs) onto an acid-free tube, wrapped in breathable Tyvek or muslin (never plastic — plastic traps moisture), and stored in our climate-controlled facility at 65°F and 45% humidity year-round.
Common reasons clients use our storage: home renovations, seasonal use (heavy oriental rugs in winter, lighter pieces in summer), inheritance situations where pieces aren't yet placed, divorce or estate transitions, and military or corporate relocations. Most clients store 3–24 months. Long-term clients (multi-year storage) get periodic check-ins and re-treatment as needed.
Storage is billed monthly by rug size — typically $15–$50 per rug per month depending on dimensions. Free pickup and delivery. We also handle insurance documentation for stored pieces, which can be required for fine-art riders during the storage period.
One detail clients often overlook: insurance for stored rugs. Most homeowners policies do not cover off-premises storage by default, and many fine-art riders require specific documentation of the storage facility and conditions. We provide a written storage agreement that includes facility specifications, environmental controls, and our liability terms — documentation that satisfies most major fine-art insurance carriers.
