Rug Appraisal at Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners — certified valuations for insurance and estate since 1881

What we appraise

Hand-knotted oriental and persian rugs, antique and modern. Hand-tufted and hooked rugs. Decorative and tribal pieces. Anything woven for the floor — if you have a rug and need to know what it is worth, we can tell you.

What the report includes

Origin and weaving region, age estimate, materials (warp, weft, pile), knot count and density, dimensions, condition assessment, and a documented value with rationale. Reports are accepted by major insurers, estate attorneys, and tax authorities.

Why direct inspection matters

Online or sight-unseen appraisals miss what matters most: condition, repairs, and dye stability. We appraise in person, with the rug in front of us. The report is signed and stands up to scrutiny.

When You Need One

When a written appraisal helps.

A written appraisal puts a defensible value on a rug for a specific purpose. The most common reasons people ask for one are insurance — scheduling a valuable rug on a policy, or documenting a loss for a claim — and estate matters, where a value is needed for probate or to divide property fairly among heirs.

Appraisals are also used for charitable donations, where a written valuation supports the deduction, and for resale, where knowing the realistic market value helps you set or judge a price. Each purpose can call for a different basis of value, so it helps to tell us why you need the appraisal when you book it.

  • Insurance — scheduling coverage or documenting a claim
  • Estate, probate, and equitable division among heirs
  • Charitable donation documentation
  • Resale and fair-market guidance
Common Questions

Appraisal questions.

How much does an appraisal cost?
Appraisals are a flat fee per rug, quoted up front. The fee reflects the inspection and the written report, and is independent of the value we arrive at.
Can you appraise a rug from photos?
An accurate valuation needs the rug in hand. Knot count, materials, dyes, condition, and construction all factor into value and can't be judged reliably from a photo, which is why we inspect each rug directly before issuing a report.
Will the appraisal be accepted by my insurance company?
The report is a written, itemized valuation suitable for insurance scheduling and claims. If your insurer has a specific format or requirement, let us know when you book and we'll account for it.
How long until I get the report?
Once we've inspected the rug, the written report typically follows within a few business days. We'll confirm timing when you drop off or we pick up.
What is a rug appraisal?
A rug appraisal is a professional assessment of a rug's value, documented in a written report. It identifies the rug's origin, materials, age, construction, and condition, and assigns a value for insurance, resale, estate, or donation purposes.
What determines a rug's value?
Value comes from several factors: origin and age, materials such as wool or silk, knot count and quality of weave, design and rarity, and overall condition. A finely woven, antique, hand-knotted rug in good condition is worth far more than a worn or machine-made one.
What is the difference between insurance value and fair-market value?
Insurance (replacement) value is what it would cost to replace the rug with a comparable one, and is usually the highest figure. Fair-market value is what the rug would realistically sell for between a willing buyer and seller. We state which basis a report uses, because they serve different purposes.
How do I know if my rug is valuable or antique?
Signs of value include hand-knotting (a detailed pattern visible on the back and fringe that is part of the foundation), natural wool or silk fibers, a fine, dense weave, and age. A true antique is generally 100 years or older. A professional appraisal confirms what you actually have.
Do I need an appraisal to insure my rug?
For a valuable rug, yes. Most insurers want a written appraisal with a documented replacement value to schedule the rug on a policy and to settle a claim if it is damaged, lost, or stolen. Without one, you may not be reimbursed for what the rug is really worth.
When should I get my rug appraised?
Common reasons are insuring a valuable rug, settling an estate, dividing or donating property, or deciding whether to sell. It is also worth appraising an inherited or older rug when you simply do not know what it is or what it is worth.
