Rug Cleaning at Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners — professional rug cleaning since 1881

Hand-knotted rugs are built like sponges. They hold dirt deep in their foundation — the warps and wefts beneath the visible pile — and that dirt cannot be lifted by surface methods. Steam cleaning, dry-clean powders, and consumer carpet shampoos all leave residue behind. Over time, that residue attracts more dirt, breaks down fibers, and shortens the rug's life.

Our process starts with a careful inspection — fiber type, dye stability, age, weave structure, prior repairs — and only then do we choose the wash. Most wool rugs receive a full immersion bath; silk, antique, or unusually delicate rugs get a more controlled treatment. Either way, the rug is fully rinsed and properly dried, the way it was meant to be.

Cleaning services

Rug Wash

Full immersion bath in our facility. Pre-dusting, hand pre-treatment of stains, fiber-safe soaps, complete rinsing, and controlled drying. The standard service for almost every rug we receive.

Scotchgard

Invisible stain-resistant treatment applied after cleaning. Buys you time when spills happen — most liquids will bead and sit on the surface long enough to be blotted up before they reach the fibers.

Deodorize

For rugs with embedded odors — pet, smoke, mildew, or general age. Treatment penetrates the foundation, not just the pile.

Mothproof

Protective treatment for wool rugs, particularly those that will be stored or placed in low-traffic rooms. Moths target undisturbed wool — mothproofing is the easiest preventive step.

Color Run Removal

When red dye bleeds into ivory wool, the rug isn't ruined — but you need someone who knows what they're doing. We can usually correct dye runs without affecting the original color, even years after the bleed.

Pet Stain Removal

Pet stains are part stain, part odor, and part backing damage. We address all three. Older stains that have wicked into the foundation are tougher but rarely impossible.

"You wouldn't dry-clean a sponge. You wash it, you rinse it, you let it dry. A rug is no different."

Common Questions

Rug cleaning questions.

How much does rug cleaning cost?
Cleaning is priced by the rug's size and condition, so we give you a firm quote before any work starts — there are no surprises after the fact. Schedule a free pick-up and we'll confirm the price once we've seen the rug.
How long does cleaning take?
Standard turnaround is about a week from pick-up to delivery. Drying is done slowly and under controlled conditions because that's what protects the rug, so we don't rush that stage.
Do you pick up and deliver?
Yes — free pick-up and delivery across all five metro areas. We confirm a window, collect the rug, and bring it back when it's ready.
Is full-immersion washing safe for antique or silk rugs?
Yes, when the method is matched to the piece. Delicate, antique, and silk rugs are washed by hand with gentler chemistry, cooler water, and careful drying — which is exactly why they aren't run through a one-size machine process.
What is included in professional rug cleaning?
It is a full, hand-finished process. The rug is first dusted to remove dry soil, then hand-washed by immersion with chemistry matched to the fiber, thoroughly rinsed, and dried flat under controlled conditions. Spot and odor treatment or minor repairs can be added when a rug needs them.
How is rug cleaning different from carpet cleaning?
Rug cleaning is a hand process built for wool, silk, and natural dyes, while carpet cleaning is a machine process built for synthetic wall-to-wall carpet. We dust, hand-wash, and controlled-dry each rug off the floor, rather than running hot water and harsh chemicals over it in place, which can shrink wool and make dyes run.
How often should I have my rug professionally cleaned?
For most homes, every one to three years, and every 12 to 18 months for high-traffic rooms, homes with pets, or anyone with allergies. Regular cleaning removes the abrasive grit that shortens a rug's life. Vacuum in between to keep surface dust down.
Can you remove pet stains and odor from a rug?
Often, yes. A full immersion wash flushes urine salts and odor-causing bacteria out of the foundation, which surface cleaning cannot reach. Deep, long-standing pet urine can cause permanent dye damage, so we assess each rug honestly before treatment.
What types of rugs do you clean?
We hand-clean oriental, Persian, antique, silk, wool, hand-knotted, and machine-made area rugs. The method is matched to each rug's fiber and construction, so delicate and valuable pieces get gentler handling than sturdy machine-made rugs.
Does rug cleaning remove dust and allergens?
Yes, far more than vacuuming. The dusting stage releases pounds of dry soil from deep in the foundation, and the wash flushes out dust mites, dander, and pollen that settle below the surface, which is a real benefit for allergy-sensitive homes.
What areas do you serve?
We provide rug cleaning with free pick-up and delivery across Memphis TN, Nashville TN, Oklahoma City OK, Tulsa OK, and Dallas TX, plus the surrounding suburbs in each metro.
