Tulsa has more important pre-war oriental rug collections than any other city in Oklahoma. The oil-era mansions in Maple Ridge, Brookside, and the streets around Utica Square hold pieces that were brought back from major buying trips a century ago — many original to the homes themselves. These antique pieces require conservative cleaning methods very different from what a modern rug needs. Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners specializes in exactly this work, and has since 1881.

Oriental rug cleaning is fundamentally different from carpet cleaning. Hand-knotted construction means natural fibers (wool, silk, cotton) and often natural dyes that react badly to harsh detergents, hot water, or aggressive scrubbing. We test every color for dye stability before any wet cleaning, hand-dust to remove embedded grit, hand pre-treat any stains, and wash by full immersion when the construction allows or surface methods for delicate pieces. Drying is in a controlled-humidity room.

Free pick-up across the Tulsa metropolitan area and Northeast Oklahoma. Most rugs are returned within 7 days from pick-up. We provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Tulsa Oriental Rug FAQ

Common questions about oriental rug cleaning in Tulsa.

Where in Tulsa do you offer pick-up?

Free pick-up throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Sapulpa, Bartlesville, and surrounding Northeast Oklahoma communities.

What counts as an oriental rug?

Oriental rugs are hand-knotted rugs woven in the regions historically called the Orient — from Turkey through Iran, the Caucasus, Central Asia, India, Tibet, and China. The defining characteristic is hand knotting, not country of origin alone.

Are antique Tulsa rugs more demanding to clean than newer pieces?

Yes — significantly. Antique rugs have weakened foundations, often-fugitive natural dyes, and aged wool that requires gentle handling. We approach every antique with conservative methods: cool water, low-pH chemistry, dye testing on every color, and controlled drying. Many Tulsa antique pieces have not been properly cleaned in decades, and the difference is dramatic.

How often should I have my oriental rug cleaned?

Hand-knotted oriental rugs typically need professional cleaning every 3 to 5 years. High-traffic areas, homes with pets, and humid climates shorten the recommended interval.

How long does oriental rug cleaning take?

Most oriental rugs take 7 days from pick-up to delivery. Heavily soiled or repair-required pieces take longer. We always provide a written estimate with specific timeline before any work begins.
