Most rugs in OKC homes are wool, and most haven't been formally appraised. Generic rug evaluation often misses wool-specific value factors entirely — fiber spinning method, lanolin content, fiber length, dye analysis, and condition factors specific to wool. We provide complete wool-specific USPAP-compliant appraisal to OKC clients with free metro-wide pick-up. Insurance scheduling, estate documentation, and divorce settlements all benefit from accurate wool quality assessment.

Wool quality is one of the largest single drivers of a wool rug's appraised value — and one of the most often overlooked by inexperienced appraisers. The same rug design, the same knot count, and the same regional origin can produce wildly different valuations depending on the wool used to weave it. Hand-spun Persian wool from a 1920s Heriz appraises at a meaningful premium over machine-spun New Zealand wool of similar gauge in a contemporary piece — because the wool itself is different, and the market recognizes the difference.

Free pick-up across the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Most rugs are returned within 7 days from pick-up. We provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Wool Rug Specialty

What drives wool rug value.

Six wool-specific factors that meaningfully affect appraised value.

Hand-spun vs. machine-spun

Hand-spun wool has irregular twist, variable fiber length, and natural character that machine-spun cannot replicate. Hand-spun typically values higher.

Lanolin content

Higher-lanolin wool indicates better breed selection and proper processing. Rugs cleaned with aggressive chemistry have lost lanolin permanently.

Fiber length (staple)

Longer-staple wool produces stronger, more durable, more lustrous rugs. Tibetan highland wool is prized partly for staple length.

Dye type — natural vs. synthetic

Older natural-dyed wool typically values higher than synthetic-dyed wool of comparable construction, especially for antique pieces.

Wool age & aging characteristics

Older wool develops specific color and texture characteristics ('patina') that the market recognizes and values. Cannot be replicated.

Condition specific to wool

Moth damage, lanolin loss, pile distortion, and dye loss are wool-specific condition factors. Each affects appraised value.

Oklahoma City Wool Rug FAQ

Common questions about wool rug appraisal in Oklahoma City.

Where in OKC do you offer wool rug appraisal pick-up?

Free pick-up throughout the OKC metro: Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon, Mustang, Bethany, Nichols Hills, Midwest City, Choctaw, and surrounding communities.

Does wool quality affect a rug's appraised value?

Significantly. Wool type, fiber length, lanolin content, and twist all factor into appraisal. Hand-spun traditional Persian or Turkish wool typically values higher than machine-spun New Zealand wool, even when knot count and design are similar.

Are most OKC wool rugs worth formally appraising?

Variable. Hand-knotted oriental wool, antique wool pieces, and any wool rug being scheduled on insurance are typically worth formal appraisal. Modest machine-made wool may not justify the cost. We give honest assessment up front.

How do you assess wool quality during appraisal?

By visual inspection (fiber length, twist, irregularity), tactile assessment (lanolin feel, softness), and back-of-rug examination. For high-value pieces, we examine wool under magnification to identify spinning method and fiber characteristics.

Are wool rugs always worth appraising?

Not always. Modest machine-made wool rugs have replacement values that often don't justify formal appraisal cost. Hand-knotted wool oriental rugs, antique wool pieces, and any wool rug being scheduled on insurance — these are typically worth appraisal.
